Amputee Rehabilitation Study Days for Health Professionals

The wider team at Peke Waihanga regularly delivers Study Days to share their knowledge and expertise with health professionals who support people living with limb loss. Physiotherapists, nurses, and other clinicians attend from across New Zealand, representing both public and private organisations.

A successful day in Hamilton

Our most recent Study Day, held in Hamilton, was a fantastic success. Eighteen professionals travelled from as far afield as Whangārei, Auckland, Tauranga, and Gisborne to take part. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants highlighting the value of the interactive sessions, networking opportunities, and seeing our wider team in action.

Learning and connection

Like all study days, Hamilton’s Study Day was made up of a range of short presentations given by various members of the Peke Waihanga team. This included Hamilton's regional manager, nurse specialist, physiotherapists, a clinical prosthetist, occupational therapist, clinical orthotist, and a peer support service coordinator.

The wide range of topics delivered covers rehabilitation and assessment, prosthetic myths, manufacture and fitting, orthotic care, pre-amputation considerations, and the vital role of peer support. Alongside presentations, there are opportunities for open discussion, sharing experiences, and accessing helpful written resources.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive: “Lots of written information available. The attendees really seemed to enjoy face-to-face sessions.” One attendee summed the day up perfectly: “What a great service – there’s a lot more to it than I realised. It was wonderful to see the whole team wrapping around the person, their family, and whānau.”
