Mentoring the Next Generation
It’s not often the Hamilton team hosts students, so they were especially excited to welcome Daimon Leilua-Paekau for a 30-hour observational placement during April and May this year.
Daimon, a second-year Bachelor of Physiotherapy student at Wintec, spent five days shadowing physiotherapist Marise Henry and other members of the team. The focus of his placement was on communication and professional behaviour, giving him the opportunity to observe how care is delivered at Peke Waihanga from a physiotherapy perspective.
During his time at the centre, Daimon gained a deeper appreciation for the challenges some patients face – especially those who live rurally and have to travel several hours to access their care. He saw firsthand how the patient is at the centre of our care.
Reflecting on his experience, Daimon said he “loved it!” He found it fascinating to explore a different side of physiotherapy, and especially enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside prosthetists and orthotists. Watching casts being made was an unexpected highlight, and seeing patients make steady progress throughout their appointments was incredibly rewarding.

Daimon’s interest in physiotherapy began when one of his grandparents had a hip replacement. Just a couple of days after surgery, Daimon was amazed to see his grandmother up and walking again with the help of a physiotherapist. The positive impact of that moment stuck with him – and set him on the path toward a career in rehab.
Once qualified, Daimon hopes to work in a rehabilitation setting and would love the chance to return to Peke Waihanga in the future.
His mentor, Marise Henry, said, “I’ve really loved having a chance to share some of my knowledge. Daimon’s lovely and it’s been a wonderful experience.”
All the best for the rest of your studies, Daimon and we look forward to seeing you again.
