Hamilton Community Helps Shape New Silicone Limbs
Late last month, locals from St Luke’s Church in Hamilton came together to quite literally give us a hand – and a foot – to support patients who need silicone prosthetics.
When one of our orthotic patients, Nancy, heard that the Silicone Studio was looking to expand its library of skin impressions to better reflect a wider range of ages, she offered to help by organising volunteers through her church community. The result was a wonderful mix of participants, ranging from as young as eight to 84 years old, all eager to contribute.
What began with simple palm impressions soon grew into a fun and generous event, with people volunteering elbows, knees and feet as well. The group was happy to know their contributions would help others, and the session became another way for the St Luke’s community to come together in support of a good cause.
Each new impression helps the Silicone Studio improve the realism and texture of silicone fingers, hands, feet and limbs, creating a more natural and personalised experience for patients.
Attending the event from Peke Waihanga were Claire Heapy and Katja Hetsch, who both said they were delighted by the community’s enthusiasm and willingness to help. With plans to produce larger silicone limbs in the future, there may be more opportunities like this for other communities to get involved.
